NRMA CTP claim: how it works, and where psychology fits in

NRMA is one of the insurers on our NSW CTP insurer quick-reference. If NRMA is the insurer for the at-fault vehicle in your accident, here are the ways NRMA specifically lets you start a claim, its dedicated claim contact line, and how psychology treatment approval fits into that. Motor Accident Psychology NSW is an independent directory, not affiliated with NRMA.

Three ways to start an NRMA CTP claim

NRMA's own claims page sets out three ways to get a claim moving, and one urgent option if you need medical help before any of them are finished:

  1. Online, through Service NSW. "Online CTP claims are made through the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA)." You need a MyServiceNSW account and a Certificate of Fitness completed by your doctor to use it.
  2. By post or email, direct to NRMA. Fill out both the Application for personal injury benefits and a Certificate of Fitness (completed by your doctor), then send them by email to [email protected] or by post to NRMA Insurance CTP Claims, GPO Box 481, Sydney NSW 2001.
  3. Claiming on behalf of someone else. NRMA's advice line can walk a family member or friend through starting a claim for someone who was injured.

Whichever way you lodge, NRMA's page says to "claim within 28 days of the accident to make sure you receive all the benefits you could be eligible for." See the claim timeline guide for the full set of scheme deadlines, including what happens if you are later than that.

If you need medical help right away and have not finished lodging yet, NRMA's page notes it "may be able to approve payment for you to see a doctor and get two medical treatments while you're completing your claim." Call the advice line below to ask about this.

NRMA's CTP Injury Advice Line

NRMA publishes a dedicated number for the claim itself: the CTP Injury Advice Line, 1800 032 220. NRMA's page states, "Call us on 1800 032 220 and we'll help with every step of your claim." That is distinct from NRMA's general contact number listed on our insurer quick-reference page; use the advice line above for anything specific to a CTP claim or treatment request. If the at-fault vehicle was insured with Allianz instead, see our Allianz CTP claim page.

How psychology treatment gets approved

NRMA's claims page talks about getting "treatment and support to recover from your injuries" in general terms. It does not set out a separate process for psychology specifically, and neither NRMA nor SIRA publishes an insurer-by-insurer comparison of approval times. That is because the approval steps themselves come from SIRA's Motor Accident Guidelines and apply the same way regardless of which of the six insurers is handling your claim: after an initial session, your psychologist submits an Allied Health Treatment Request, and the insurer has 10 working days to respond in writing.

The full walkthrough, common to every NSW CTP insurer including NRMA, is on our insurer quick-reference page and in the referral and approval process guide. For what the treatment itself typically covers, see how CTP covers psychological treatment.

Common questions

How do I contact NRMA about a CTP claim?

NRMA runs a dedicated CTP Injury Advice Line on 1800 032 220 for help with any step of a motor accident claim. This is a different number from NRMA's general customer service line, so use it specifically for CTP claim or treatment questions.

Does NRMA cover psychology treatment under a CTP claim?

Psychology is one of the allied health treatments the NSW CTP scheme funds, and that comes from SIRA's Motor Accident Guidelines rather than from NRMA's own policy. NRMA's claims page describes getting "treatment and support to recover from your injuries" without breaking that down by treatment type; the specific approval steps for psychology are the same whichever of the six licensed insurers is handling your claim.

How long do I have to lodge an NRMA CTP claim?

NRMA advises claiming within 28 days of the accident so you receive all the benefits you could be eligible for. See the claim timeline guide for the full set of deadlines, including what happens if you lodge later.
