Allianz CTP claim: how it works, and where psychology fits in

Allianz's own claims page sets out three steps to get a claim moving:

1. Get the registration details. You need the registration details of the vehicles involved in the accident.
2. Report the accident. Report it to NSW Police on 131 444, unless police already attended the scene.
3. Complete your form. Download, print and fill out the claim form, then sign and send it to Allianz, including a medical certificate from your GP detailing your fitness for work.

Allianz's page says to provide the form within three months of the accident, or within 28 days to maximise your entitlement to benefits: submitting within 28 days means treatment and care benefits can still start from the date of the accident, but if you submit later, benefits for income support may not begin until the date the claim is actually made. The completed form goes by post to Allianz Australia, NSW CTP Claims Department, GPO Box 4629, Sydney NSW 2001. Allianz's page also lists an email option (with the original still required by post); see Allianz's own claims page above for the exact addresses to use.

Allianz's claims page publishes a guide to its own response times. And for someone waiting to hear back, that is the part worth knowing:

• New claim submitted: confirmation within 3 business days of lodging, with next steps outlined.
• Treatment requests (the kind your psychologist submits): a response within 10 business days, confirmed with you and your provider in writing. This matches the scheme-wide 10 working day rule already covered on our insurer quick-reference page.
• Liability decision, first 52 weeks: within 4 weeks of lodging, on whether you are entitled to treatment, care and income support.
• Liability decision, beyond 52 weeks: within 9 months of lodging.

Allianz's own page adds that these "are a guide only and may vary depending on your circumstances and the statutory requirements that apply."

Allianz's claims page does not set out a separate process for psychology, and it never names psychology or allied health treatment specifically. That is because the approval steps come from SIRA's Motor Accident Guidelines and apply the same way regardless of which of the six insurers is handling your claim: after an initial session, your psychologist submits an Allied Health Treatment Request, and the insurer has 10 working days to respond in writing, the same window Allianz's own response-time table above states for treatment requests.
